A ‘listed’ building is one that has been judged to have national importance in terms of historical or architectural interest.

By officially listing a building this will preserve any historic features the structure may have. In England, anyone can nominate a building through Historic England and make a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The body will give the final decision which is based around their rules, regulations and different principles.

There are three different types of listed buildings, based around their historical importance and if they have any features that would be in the public’s best interest to preserve for the future.

Grade I – These are classed as of exceptional interest

Grade II – Classed as particularly important buildings of more than special interest

Grade III – Buildings of special interest
